Wildlife from University of Missouri-Columbia Position Description: My position, Wildlife Outreach Specialist,
seeks to improve quality and sustainability of human environments and
natural resources in Michigan. Through outreach and education, and by
expanding and enriching communication with stakeholders, specific objectives
include:

Outreach Projects Assisted in formulating the National Fish and Wildlife Health Initiative; a policy framework that may be used to minimize the negative impacts of disease issues involving fish and wildlife in the United States. Collaborated with Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employees and MSU faculty on Michigan 's wolf issues. Partnered with numerous stakeholders to create two brochures to address predator-livestock conflicts. Synthesized current wolf research related to non-lethal management techniques, wolf fertility control, and wolf attacks on humans, pets, and hunting dogs for inclusion in comprehensive wolf paper. Designed information booklet that addresses human concerns related to wolves. Click here to view the predator livestock brochures. Assessed stakeholders' needs associated with deer research in south-central Michigan. Created and edited south-central white-tailed deer fact sheets for private landowners and natural resource agency/organization personnel. Developed oral presentations and web site for the south-central deer project. Click here to visit the south-central deer web site. Assisted in planning and organizing the Contingency Planning for Invasive Species and Diseases in the National Parks System Workshop (Ft. Collins, CO). Compiled and synthesized collaborators' input and comments into an interactive, invasive species risk assessment web site to assess risk level, management response options, and primary and collateral impacts. Conducted research that examined preparedness for managing the risk of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) among states. Presented research that assessed strategies used for managing CWD at three professional conferences (International Wildlife Management Congress, The Wildlife Society, International CWD Symposium); published a Findings Abstract in the Human Dimensions of Wildlife Journal. Designed an information packet for managing nuisance wildlife on Michigan State University campus. Devised concept for a graduate student magazine and assists graduate students with biannual publication. Click here to view recent issues of the Spotlight Magazine. Synthesized information related to internationalization and environment for NCA accreditation self-study. Collaborated with University officials and stakeholders on a plan to establish an NCAA rifle team and build a multi-use shooting and education facility (to include archery, smallbore, and air rifle) on MSU's campus. Helped facilitate partnerships between Criminal Justice Department and Fisheries and Wildlife Department for conservation officer program and practical training in firearms. Improved breadth of knowledge by researching issues related to systems thinking, program evaluation, decision analysis, risk perception, leadership, and stakeholder involvement processes.
