Congratulations to the Youth Environmental Service and Stewardship (YESS) Grant recipients: For April 1998 

Grants made available through the; 
4-H Patterns On the Land Initiative, 
4-H Natural Resources and Environmental Education Program 

Grant money was provided by the W.K.Kellogg Foundation to the Michigan 4-H 
Foundation. 

Grants were awarded based on the following main points: 
1. Were youth involved in writing the proposal and planning the activities? 
2. Was the proposed project "do-able"? 
3. Does the proposed project focus on land or watershed stewardship or 
    enhancement? 
4. Does the proposal clearly indicate what activities are planned and how 
    the funding will be used? 

The counties, groups and awards are as follows: 

*Antrim County - Central Lake High School Envirothon Team 
Chain O'Lakes Water Quality Protection Project. They will put up signs at 
all landing sites to educate boat owners of zebra mussels. They will also 
survey shoreline landowners.  Grant Award: $288 

* Barry County - Barry County 4-H teens and parents. 
The project will involve clean-up of trails, removal of fallen trees and 
soil erosion problems, and make new signs for the trails at Yankee Springs 
State Recreational Area.  Grant Award:  $500 

* Benzie County - Benzie Central High School Envirothon Team 
Benzie Valley Rail Trail Natural Features Survey Project. They will 
inventory unique plants, habitats, wildlife and water quality along the 
trail.  Grant Award: $100 

*Barry County - Region V FFA Leadership Camp 
The project will include landscaping work, planting flowers & shrubs and 
building fencing, around the new facilities of Camp Manitou-Lin in 
Caledonial, MI. Grant Award: $300 

*Calhoun County - Envirothon Team II 
Prairie Restoration Project at Binder Park Zoo. To restore a fallow field to 
native prairie and determine the most effective management technique by 
using four methods and one control.  Grant Award: $200 

* Calhoun County - Envirothon Team I 
Wetland Restoration Project near Binder Park Zoo. They will restore 10 acres 
of agricultural land to its native wetland environment. Grant Award: $200 

* Gladwin County - Gladwin High School Envirothon Team 
The project will include the development of a trail map and plant 
identification brochure and marking of nature trails for Gladwin County 
Recreation Area. 
Grant Award: $500 

* Gratiot County - Students at Alma High School 
The project is planting flowers around trees on Main St. and State St. in 
Alma, Michigan.  Grant Award: $200 

* Mecosta County - Envirothon Team 
Protecting Our Watershed Community Education Project.  Teens teach children 
and adult groups in Mecosta County about the importance of protecting the 
watershed. They teach by demonstrations of a surface water model, 
groundwater model, wetland model, hands-on activities, supplying resource 
materials and promoting the Adopt a Stream Project. Grant Award: $565 

* Midland County - Teens at North Midland Family Center 
The project will include researching flower species preferred by butterflies 
and planting a garden to attract butterflies at the North Midland Family Center. 
Grant Award: $450 

* Missaukee County - 4-H Natural Resource Club 
Falmouth Dam Site Restoration Project. They will clean up and restore the 
area; repair stairway, improve trails and swimming area and new signs, 
around the Falmouth Dam so it will be a nice place for community people to 
go and enjoy. 
Grant Award: $500 

* Oakland County - Boy Scouts 
Bluebird House Project. They will build bluebird nest boxes with day camp 
participants and elementary school students and install poles at Mill Pond 
Park in Davisburg. 
Grant Award: $250 

* Presque Isle County - Rogers City High School Students 
Adopt a Garden Project for the community of Hawks, MI. They will build and 
place flower boxes, butterfly boxes, develop a walking trail, label plants 
and trees, plant wildflowers and create a sandbox for young children.  Grant 
Award: $200
