College of AGNRThe CANRBiometryGroup is a loosely organized group in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University. There is no central office or mailing address you can use. To get in touch with us, please browse the list of members, and contact an individual through e-mail, voice mail, or fax.

Biometry

Biometry is defined as the application of statistics to biological observations and phenomena. Biology will include disciplinary areas in life science, agriculture and natural resources. The problems that are dealt by the Biometry Group are different from those by theoretical and mathematical statisticians.

Biometry Group Members

Faculty and Staff in CANR with teaching, research or service programs that deal with stochastic phenomena, and who can demonstrate his/her teaching, consulting or research is in line with the Mission of BiG can be a member of the Biometry Group. Current Members: Jim Bence, Bryan Epperson, Dan Hayes,   Mike Jones,  Sasha Kravchenko, Jack Liu, Brian Maurer, Peter Saama, Rob Tempelman and Scott Winterstein.

Mission Statement

The mission of the CANR Biometry Group is to disseminate and develop knowledge in biometry relevant to agriculture, natural resources, and other life sciences, thereby advancing the knowledge of the quantitative aspects of these disciplines and to ensure the quality of all research and development in these areas.

Vision

·  A Center for Excellence and leadership in Biometry education and development in Michigan, in the U.S., and globally.

·  Education: A school that is creative in development, utilization, and evaluation of innovations in the teaching of biometrical techniques; that offers a streamlined curricula in Biometry to meet needs for all undergraduate and graduate programs in MAES affiliated units; and that offers advanced degrees in Biometry.

·  Research & Development: A leading source of objective, research-based knowledge and information on biometrical technology.

·  Partnership: A partnership of researchers focusing on the discovery and disseminate knowledge in Biometry. A partnership of faculty and staff working with students and personnel in MAES affiliated units in advancing the quality of research. A partnership with industrial companies and cooperatives, governmental foundations and agencies in both personnel training and research and development.

Approach and Methods

Curriculum

  • Offer streamlined courses covering topics of biometrical techniques to meet the needs of all students in MAES affiliated units at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Coordinate biometrical topics in the quantitative aspects of specialized CANR courses.
  • Offer Biometry graduate programs with specific requirements such as thesis and core graduate courses.
  • Conduct research forum, symposia, and short courses involving BiG members and distinguished Biometricians off-campus.
  • Develop brochure, web page and other means for the recruitment of quality students and postdoctoral scholars.

Research & Development & Partnership

  • Establish research teams and task forces involving BiG members and other faculty at MSU.
  • Establish linkage with other MSU units and groups such as Plant Breeding & Genetics, Animal Breeding & Genetics, and Statistics Department, other research institutes in Michigan, in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Assist and collaborate with MAES colleagues to assure the quality of research.
  • Establish partnership with statistical consulting firms, statistical computing software companies, industry and governmental agencies for student internships and in-service training services.
  • Establish partnership with other educational institutions for teaching and consulting internships, summer courses, and as source for graduate students.
